Impairment and Mental Illness in Of Mice and Men - Literature Essay Samples

Throughout history, those who are not on level with those around them tend to be neglected. This is a trend seen among animals as the runt of a litter gets killed, eaten, or left behind, and is seen among humans as the mentally challenged or physically handicapped are treated differently and sometimes sent off to separated facilities to be dealt with. Although the treatment of lesser equipped animals has stayed the same over time, it has drastically changed for humans as they have raised the standard of living for those with mental and physical disabilities. Even though they are not yet treated as equals to non-handicapped people, their lifestyle has drastically changed from being abandoned in an inhuman â€Å"treatment† facility, to aided integration into daily life—enough at least for them to function semi-independently, with minor supervision or aid. In comparison to typical treatment of the mentally challenged during the depression era, Lennie, a central character i n Steinbecks Of Mice and Men, was quite pampered by his friend George. What people define as â€Å"mentally challenged varies between person to person. According to a medical dictionary, â€Å"the United States Government defines a disability as ‘a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of an individuals major life activities’ this includes both those individuals with a record of an impairment and those regarded as having such an impairment† (Mentally Challenged†). It also says, â€Å"The World Health Organization defines disability as loss of function at the level of the whole person, which may include inability to communicate or to perform mobility, activities of daily living, or necessary vocational or avocational activities; rehabilitation is aimed at teaching patients to remediate or compensate and thus maximize functional independence† (Mentally Challenged†). So, as it will be defined in this paper, mentally challenged will be used in reference to people who have an in ability to function normally in everyday life without aid. This applies most specifically to Lennie, who would not be able to continue working on a ranch successfully without George’s guidance. Of Mice and Men in set during the depression era in the United States, where and when it was written by the author, John Steinbeck. It takes place at a ranch and its surrounding areas. It starts off with Lennie and George after getting kicked off their bus. They are walking through the area as they head to the next ranch theyre going to be employed at. They are a few miles south of Soledad (Steinbeck 1) by the Salinas River. It is spring based on the condition of the area, with the willows fresh and green (Steinbeck 1) and the debris of the winters flooding (Steinbeck 1) going through the river. Here by the river is where the two men initiate their journey, and where they promise to meet up if anything happens at this new ranch theyre going to. This is also a well-placed location so that when George shoots Lennie it is still in a near enough proximity for the ranchers to hear the shot. Lennie is a slow, strong, and kind human being who is violent unintentionally. Lennie was â€Å"a huge man, shapeless of face, with large pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders† (Steinbeck 2). He â€Å"walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws. His arms did not swing at his sides, but hung loosely† (Steinbeck 2), showing he, like a large animal, is strong, but not graceful or quick (mentally or physically). He is also quite fond of soft, pretty things, such as rodents, bunnies, and women. When he is first introduced, he is discovered keeping a mouse in his pocket to stroke and is later chastised for killing it and even going into a lake to retrieve it when lost. He was driven from the previous ranch he was employed at because he grabbed a girl and she claimed rape, and he was driven from the current ranch for accidently breaking the boss’s son’s wife’s neck. George is a strong character, like Lennie, and comes across as his foil. He is the one who keeps Lennie in line and watches out for the both of them. He is the reason they have a goal in life, a job, income, and a future ahead. George is a smart, cunning, and calculating human being who is Lennie’s sole caretaker in life. He was the opposite of Lennie by how he â€Å"was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him was defined: small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose† (Steinbeck 2). By taking on this role he puts his own life and career in danger in order to maintain the stability of his friend. He admits to how he used to bully Lennie. He would â€Å"play jokes on ‘im cause he was too dumb to take care of ‘imself. But he was too dumb to even know he had a joke played on him† (Steinbeck 40). George would tease Lennie because it made him feel smart in comparison, but eventually stopped as he realized how helpless and confused the poor man was. He tells the story of how he told Lennie to jump into a lake one day, just for fun, but Lennie almost drowned. After trying to drag the man out of the water, he was excessively thankful that George saved his life. This moment of realization at how helpless this fellow human being was, is when the change occurred in George to decide to care for the man. The book depicts kind and loving treatment towards Lennie. He is quite loved and cared for by George, and his best intentions are always kept in mind. Although what George does at the end of the books can seem quite morbid, especially since this is his best friend, its actually quite kind of a deed. By shooting Lennie, George is saving the retard from himself. Hes keeping Lennie from being tortured or killed in an even worse way. As we see throughout the book, Lennie is quite often the cause of trouble. Hes not able to live his life to the fullest because of his mental illness, and because he does not comprehend his own strength. He does not understand many social norms around him, and he quite evidently does not understand the meaning of gentl e. Therefore, if he were to continue living, he wouldve caused even more trouble and would always live his life on the run. George sees this and almost seems to pity him. He takes Lennie’s life as a way of helping him out. He saves Lennie from the troubles of ranch life, and the troubles of his own ways. It shows the strong emotional bond between the two men, and how they always look out for each other. In opposition to Lennie’s luxurious treatment, it was common at the time for the mentally challenged to be placed in an asylum where they would be mistreated all their life. It was typical for patients to be tied to bed for days at a time, confined to cells, much like a prison, and left neglected or ignored. As overcrowding occurred in asylums, â€Å"patients were sleeping in wooden cribs stacked three patients high. Ice water baths were once again used, along with shock machines and electroconvulsive therapy† (The History of Mental Illness). So, the treatment of these asylum patients was quite poor and had degraded quite a bit over the time since they first became prevalent. Hydrotherapy and insulin shock therapy were popular early in the Great Depression, they â€Å"were popular in the 1930s† (1930-1950: New Therapy) However, â€Å"these methods gave way to psychotherapy in the 1940s† (1930-1950: New Therapy) and â€Å"By the 1950s, doctors favored arti ficial fever therapy and electroshock therapy (1930-1950: New Therapy). During the time of this book’s setting was also the use of lobotomy. During the great Depression, â€Å"the notorious lobotomy was introduced into American medical culture† (The History of Mental Illness). This procedure is a â€Å"medical procedure where the neural passages from the front of the brain are surgically separated from those in the back of the brain. The common result of this procedure was the patient forgetting their depressing or discouraging feelings or tendencies† (The History of Mental Illness). This was initially a delicate, time consuming process, til Walter J. Freeman was able to figure out how to perform a trans-orbital lobotomy, i.e. where they sick an ice pick under the eye and wiggle it around until they destroy the frontal lobe completely. Overall treatment of the mentally ill was quite brutal at the time, and very far off from how Lennie was treated. Compared to how the mentally challenged were commonly treated at the time this book takes place, Lennie was quite loved and cared for. He led an almost normal life at a time when that was rare or nonexistent for people with his kind of disability. With the recent Paris attacks, people have been showing solidarity by changing their Facebook profiles with the Paris Flag superimposed onto their main profile picture. When I heard of the attacks, as the rest of us did, over breaking news, I felt a range of emotions from anger to helplessness. There was nothing I could do at that moment to help those who were victimized senselessly by the hands of radical jihadist. Changing my Facebook profile was my small way of showing support for the people that were killed, terrorized, and forever affected by ISIS in Paris. A few days after the attacks, I read an opinion article on CNN by James Mulvaney on how showing solidarity through superimposed flags on your profile picture cheapens the†¦show more content†¦The danger of these thugs disrupting our way of life is too great to marginalize into a self-serving Facebook profile picture. He states the new cycle of response to terrorist is this: Grieve loudly, adopt a symbol, justify suspicions of anyone different from ourselves and eventually go back to our relatively carefree and careless lives (Mulvaney 2015). To justify, or draw parallels to his point of view, Mulvany points to the September 11th attacks of 2001 as an example of how we rallied behind the FDNY, NYPD, and hardhats, yet 14 years later, there may not be enough political will to even pass the Zardoga act to extend health care benefits for people injured saving others that day (Mulvaney 2015). He points out that after a few more news cycles, the show of our French Flag solidarity w ill fade from Facebook and Paris will drop the headlines. (Mulvaney 2015). However, terrorism will not go away or be deterred by symbols of solidarity. In his conclusion, Mulvaney feels American leadership should turn the requirements against the war on terror from symbols to tangible action. He writes that an American with a French Facebook flag demeans the war on terror and is as effective as a smiley face (Mulvaney 2015). In case the organization is going to handle a new task, the risk level of which is not yet evaluated by the authority, it will designate a qualified safety person for the purpose of coordinating the implementation of the job (Kagan Barnoy, 2013). Besides, in case the task is new, it is also equally important that the organization analyzes the risks associated and plan for the safety measures be forehand, in order to prevent the possibility of any fatal accidents. Besides, the organization will also need to ensure that the organization hires risk analysts who will be entrusted with the job of on-site health safety inspection, as well as for conducing health monitoring. Each job area may have some or other kind of risk associated with it, and the risk analyst will be entrusted with the duty of identifying potential workplace hazards and adopting preventive measures for the same. Besides, the organization cannot expect its employees to adhere to the set of workplace regulations each time, they are performing a task. Hence, the organization will arrange interactive sessions as well as meetings at regular periodical intervals for communicating the workplace safety guidelines to the employees, and explaining them the importance of the same. A five minute talk on safety can always help in drawing the attention of the employees, and building awareness among them regarding the importance of adhering to the health guidelines. It should be noted that if an organization keeps on reporting accidents or employee illness, it will directly affect the productivity and efficiency rate of the employees (Reason, 2016). Above all, the presence of a health committee, such as a Safety Health Committee within the organization is also highly important, and the members of the organization will be responsible for revising the workplace safety guidelines as well as tracking the month ly progress of the same. There should be a strong administrative mechanism within the committee that will keep a track on the occupational accidents taking place within the organization. As and when an accident is being reported to occur within the organization, the head of the supervisory committee must be informed within 72 hours. In case the employee is being injured owing to workplace related issue, he must be entered in a highly modified job program, whereby light duties, less stressful job functions are being assigned to him. 3. Criteria for Evaluation: It is not sufficient for an organization to introduce a safe workplace culture, as it is equally important that the organization adopts effective means for evaluating and monitoring the effectiveness of the workplace safety policies. As mentioned above, the organization will set up a supervisory committee that will be responsible for supervising the implementation of the workplace safety policies, and for following up with the employees of the respective departments as to how far the workplace safety guidelines are being followed. Besides, a strong investigation system is it be created within the organization so that once an accident occurs within the organization, it is immediately being noted and is being reported back to the authority, so that the root cause of these fatal accidents can be analyzed (Singer Vogus, 2013). Again, the organization will also arrange meetings and workshops if necessary so that the organization focuses on the behavior-based safety methods. The organizat ion will introduce the system of anonymous observation of co-workers, whereby the employees of the organization will be encouraged to observe as well as report unsafe behavior as conducted by their colleagues at workplace. A series of evaluations will also be done every month, so as to compare the number of fatal or non-fatal work related injuries occurring in a specific month, as compared to the same of the previous months (Zero, 2014). Besides, conducting survey on the employees, asking them to share their views regarding the workplace health and safety procedures, can also help in assessing and re-examining the existent workplace health and safety procedures. 4. Cultural Leadership Model: Since I work in a construction company, I believe that Procedure is the Key is the best and most effective style of cultural leadership model that will suit the purpose of the organization. Being an industry that involves heavy works, such as the use of heavy machineries, equipment such as cranes, or installation of devices, fatal accidents can occur while handling such heavy jobs. On the other hand, overload can also lead to emotional tension or mental breakdown. Accordingly, the procedures will be drafted keeping into consideration the specific needs of the organization. 5. Package that Supports the Vision of the Safety Culture: In order to ensure the effective implementation of the workplace safety policies, it is highly important that the organization hires the service and recruits highly proficient in the field of identifying and evaluating risks associated. First of all, risk analysts will be hired for assessing the risks associated with every profession, as well as analyzing the impact of the same on the concerned employees. Besides, risk advisors and supervisors will need to be hired who will monitor the implementation of the workplace safety measures, and will recommend further changes in future, if needed. The risk supervisors will be hired for on-field supervision of the employees while they will be performing very risky jobs (Singer Vogus, 2013). Besides, since this organization deals with construction activities, a construction safety consultant will also be hired, who will be entrusted with the responsibility of offering advices and personal tips needed for heavy construction works. Besides, it is also important to note that apart from hiring the employees, the organization will be required to train the existent employees. With the help of training courses, seminars as well as professional workshops, the organization will be providing training to the employees. The training programs will help the employees recognize the safety hazards arising out of their exposure to risky circumstances and will also train them how to deal with the same (Zohar, 2014). The workshops will also train the employees, by demonstrating them how different accidents can occur owing to occupational stress or workplace related injuries. Besides, the employees will also be trained so that they can understand as well as implement the safety best practices. Since the industry is primarily based on construction-related activities, the employees will be primarily rained to identify as well as combat risks of hazards, forklift and crane operation, electrical supply, eye protection as well as exp osure to noises. Reflection Part: By participating in the online learning process, I realized that workplace safety is an integral issue that each organization must implement at the respective workplace. An organization should not merely encourage its employees to follow a set of safety policies introduced at the workplace, but must also regularly supervise and monitor employee safety issues at workplace. The other learners made me aware of the fact that regular or at least periodical evaluation of the safety policies plays an important role. Besides, I would like to highlight here that through the participation of their learners, I realized that workplace safety plays an integral role in any organization as the occurrence of a single fatal incident may lead to a huge financial loss of the said company. Besides, through the interaction with my fellow learners, I realized the importance of workplace safety rules in a construction industry, as an organization operating in the industry is usually exposed to different co nstruction or repair related activities. The workers are entrusted with risky jobs such as construction of buildings, lifting of cranes, handling of heavy equipment, and hence it is the duty of the management authority of the organizations to identify, eliminate and reduce these occupational hazards. While I always thought that the responsibility of my organization should be limited to the drafting of a number of workplace safety guidelines policies, the interaction with other learners helped me understand the importance of employee training. The organization we work in has an obligation towards us, and is responsible for building awareness among all the workers, regarding the importance of adhering to the safety guidelines policies. Besides, job safety training should be provided to all the employees irrespective of ranks and designations. One of the learners pointed out that it is important that the on-site workers should be trained about the safety guidelines policies so that they can take precaution while dealing with risky jobs, while the departmental heads of each administrative division, should be trained to supervise employee safety at workplace. Besides, I would also like to mention that I learnt from one of my co-learners that in case an organization is dealing with any risk-involving project, it is recommendable that the organization demonstrates the risks involved and the ways of combating the same beforehand, via audio-visual demonstrating aids. Accordingly, incentive programs can also be launched to the specific teams or employees for exemplary safety performance. From the postings of the other learners, I have become aware of the roles and responsibilities of the management authority as well as each individual employee towards the safety of each employee working in a company. Each organization should identify, recognize and take steps in order to eliminate the workplace risks present in every organization. I have realized that since I work in a construction based industry, it becomes doubly important for us to remain aware of the potential risks and workplace hazards, and hence our organization must necessarily comply with the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) policies and laws. One of the learners also pointed out that it is not enough to provide workplace training to the employees working in the organizations, but the management authority must also ensure that once a job is identified to be risky, the management authority must ensure that a handwritten safety data sheet is being sent and is made available to each of the employees executi ng the task. Besides, one of the learners also pointed out that it is not sufficient to train the employees, but even a single incident of fatality occurs within the organization, it is highly important that the management authority does keep a track of the time, nature and any kind of loss caused by the fatality or the work-related injury. I have understood that it is highly important that the organization does report to the nearest OSHA office for any kind of work-related injury or accident or loss within 8 hours and the OSHA office located nearby, should be made aware of any kind of employee hospitalization, amputation or loss of the employees. Another fellow learner made me aware that a organization should introduce workplace safety measures not merely because it helps in promoting workplace safety, but also because any sort of occupational injury can directly affect the productivity at workplace. For example, work-related injury would imply paid leave, employee absenteeism as w ell as low rate of productivity, as the injured employee cannot be asked to execute jobs with equal risk level in the coming month or so. Besides, I have realized that occupational health and safety policies of my organization should not merely encompass the areas of physical well-being of the employees, but should necessarily cover each aspect of mental and social well-being of the workers as well. For instance, some of the workers in our industry are regularly exposed to deafening sounds of machines, and are compelled to accomplish the same manual tasks repetitively, which often result I mental health disorders of the employees.
